Interview with the owner
Q: Hello! Introduce yourself. What is your experience with Opencart or eCommerce in general?
Hey! My name is Nik and I am software consultant for more than 20 years. I have experience with multiple eCommerce solutions including Opencart, Prestashop, Magento and even built one bespoke in the past when most of the opensource solutions were missing.
I've been working with Opencart since 2010 and I've created my first extension in early 2011, originally named "Bulk Product Edit" and now renamed Instant Product Editor (IPE), which since then is one of the bestsellers in the Marketplace.
Q: What motivated you to get started creating extensions / themes for Opencart?
It was an accident. The client I was working for, requested a feature to allow him to edit quantities and prices of his products from the product list table. I've build it, and later decided to make it as an extension and add it to Opencart Marketplace which was relatively new.
Q: What went into building your first extension / theme?
It was pretty quick, actually as the columns were only 2 or 3 and it was really straight forward. At the time the extensions didn't have ocmod, and initially the users had to add only one row in the header of the admin in order to load the extension. Later I've modified it to work with vqmod and currently it works with ocmod which really simplified the installation.
Q: Do you have any future plans / ideas of building extensions for Opencart?
At the moment I don't have ideas of new extensions, but ideas always come from client's conversations/requests, so if something popping up I will build it.
Q: What do you think is the future of Opencart?
Opencart is already mature eCommerce platform. Probably that's why the new versions appear in longer intervals. Especially with Opencart Marketplace possibilities to extend the system are endless. Although, the system is stable and mature, it's rather simplistic.
As a developer I would love to see Database Active record approach in Models, and also more Object oriented way in the code. Also probably encapsulation of the extensions into a single folder rather than writing into different folders all over the system would be a better approach.
Time will tell, but so far Opencart is a good system to host your shop.
